The other day I posted this photo of a bathroom that I did a colour consultation on.
I only heard from 2 of you… and I was hoping for more comments on it. Those who did comment on it, were bang on the money.
I will mention that this townhouse bathroom is only 6 years old… I say this to remind you that even though you may see the huge bill Boards for New homes saying something like this…..
“34 Newly developed Townhomes with Designer colours and finishes… ”
So next time you walk into a showhome… think of this post! Just because they say… designer colours, doesn’t mean that the colors and finishes are right.
So back to the bathroom. It is a common mistake for most, to underestimate the power of undertones… Any room I walk into, I am immediately drawn to checking to see if the undertones are all in line.. I know this sounds crazy, but I can’t help it! I’m conditioned to see undertones and how they work in any space..
So let’s see the photo again.
Now this is very important. We’ve got a typical Guest bathroom in a townhouse. Orange/pink undertone in the counter, Grey/blue undertone in the floor, and a green/ yellow accent tile with the large format white subway tile.
So what do we do?
The home owner really wanted to only change out the floors to tile, and leave everything else. So this is what I recommended…
While I would have pulled out the counter and replaced it with a new aborite, (as stone was not in the budget), I did want to be mindful of the homeowners budget. I suggested that we find a floor tile that works with the orange/pink/taupe counter, bit still wasn’t too over powering. The wall colour that I chose was Cedar Key by Benjamin Moore and it looks wonderful.
There wasn’t really a budget to take out the yellow/green accent tile in the shower, so I suggested that she cover that area with her shower curtain. Subway tiles are always a winner in my book, and they weren’t the root of the problem. After all, this is a guest bathroom and rarely gets any use. The room is painted, the new tile floor is laid, and it now looks restful.. Hopefully later I will get to post an after photo to show you.
Usually the best way to pull a room together is through the use of the right colour, NOT necessarily one of our favorite colours. I hope that makes sense to you, if it doesn’t then please ask me to clarify.
As soon as you start to get too many undertones going, your eye tends to never rest. When a room has one or may be 2 undertones it definitely gives the eye a place to land.
If you’re about to buy a new-build Home, or on the verge of a major reno, Drop me a line and I know I can help you make sure all the finishes chosen are the right undertones in Mind. This will save you money now, and later when you need to redo your whole space!
Take care,
