Photography For Bloggers: Photo 101

You are here: Home / Design / Photography For Bloggers: Photo 101

July 4, 2011 By Darryl

A few weeks back, Jodi and I attended a lunch with our fellow bloggers from the Canadian Design and Lifestyle Bloggers West group that we are part of. After a great lunch and great conversation it became clear that I possessed something that could be of value to some of the members of the group. So Jodi and I planned to host a evening to teach photography fundamentals to a few of the other group members. To make this event a little sweeter (pun intended), Carly (of Kitchening with Carly) was gracious enough to supply us with a tasting of her amazing French Macarons. I had spent the afternoon shooting close-ups of these tasty little treats all afternoon for her catalog, and an upcoming magazine feature. Lucky us.

The camera manual DOES make for good reading...sometimes.

So this past Monday night we had Rosa from FlutterFlutter, Michelle from I Dream Of Chairs, and Rachel and Lily from Birch + Bird over to geek it up with our cameras. The thing about photography is that anyone can learn it, it is just a question of motivation. Most of the time, and for a lot of people, all of the confusion and mystery is just too much to get past. But when there is sufficient motivation, like working on a blog you love for instance, that can be a sufficient motivating factor to start learning all of the details. As much as photography is about all of these technical details, and there a lot of details to be sure, it is more about your connection with why you are shooting in the first place.
All four of my “students” did a great job. To read a little more about their journeys with ISO and f-stop’s and aperture and more you can check out their posts. Suffice it to say with sufficient motivation, and now armed with a bit more knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals, and probably the odd question and answer by email, I expect to see good things from them in the future.

I am not afraid of holding a Canon camera now and then.

How about you? Are you afraid to venture out of Automatic? Good things are waiting for you when you are ready to leap. It just takes the right mindset and some good advise to get you going.
