Happy Monday to all of you! Wow! It has been a busy weekend. I hope all of you have found some time for rest as well.
Forgive me, my Master bed room is not quite ready to show you. It’s so close….!! I just need to frame some amazing prints I found the last week. I can’t believe the transformation already!
In the mean time, I thought I would share a DIY that I did over 3 months ago. Any parent our there who has made a trip to Ikea knows about this common kids table and chair combo. It has been the “kids table” Ikea has been known for.
Ours has seen a lot of use, and we’ve had it kicking around for quite some time. It was time for a refreshed and different look, so a punch of color was just what it needed. So that’s what I did!
Note:
Please forgive the photos. I did them really quick months ago with my little camera. Not only do I want to provide useful design and style ideas for you, but the photos on this site should be inspirational, vibrant, and over all great to look at. I will make an exception this time….
I started by spraying the table white, and added a vibrant green shade to the chairs. After the table paint was dry I added chalk board paint to the surface of the table. A very easy project, with only 3 steps, and can be easily done in a day! I’m not going to lay out all the steps in this post, but if you have any questions feel to comment. I am more than happy to answer any questions you have!
This table looks so much better! The table not only could be used as a chalk board table, but for snacks, tea parties, and all around any kind of play!
Do you still have one of these old Ikea tables kicking around too? When in doubt, why not try to make to make the simplest table look better.
Which one do you prefer? The original or a painted one like this one?

Great makeover! Your pictures are fine too! That’s what mine look like all the time! I re-painted an Ikea kids booster chair and monogrammed it for my nieces when they come to visit. I also gave my sister our old mini kids chair set and suggested we paint a chalkboard table top, still haven’t done it yet:)

Thanks! Yes, I saw that post that you did for your neice. Great idea!

Hi Jodi, I just ran across your blog.I LOVE your table and chair set. I have this exact ikea table and chair set and want to paint mine too. Most of the set is wood, but the table top and chair seats are plastic. I was wondering if you have any tips on how to paint over the plastic? Also, where do you get the chalkboard paint? thanks so much for your advice!!

Hi Michou, nice to meet you. Thanks for stoppping by. I think the best way to cover the plasitc parts is a spray primer or regular primer from a can. If you go with a spray then Kilz. primer should do the trick. Ask your local store for it. It comes in a white can for around $5.00. IF you have trouble finding it, I can email you a picture of the can. IF you decide to roll on the primer then I would roll it on with a foam roller. It provides a really smooth finish. After you apply a few coats of primer then your chairs are ready for the paint choice. You can prime the whole table and chairs if you want too.
Chalk board paint is really easy to find in any Home depot or paint supply store. I’m not sure where you are from? Chalk paint comes in all sorts of colors too, not just black. Hope this helps. IF you need any other help, feel free to contact me again – I am more than happy to help.
Thanks!
Jodi

Hi Jodi, For the kilz primer, do you use the oil based or water based paint? thanks a bunch! you really have given me the confidence to try this out now! I will let you know how it turns out!
Jodi says
I use the water based one. Much easier clean up. Yes, please do tell me how it turns out! Or send me a picture.
