This couple has been making changes to their main great space just off this office space, basically right behind me taking the photo. They just finished painting it before Christmas in the same chocolate-brown and a sage green. They wanted me to choose a color for the office that would co-ordinate with main great room. This is where I could not keep my mouth glued shut. I really felt with all the major changes and the new look that they were trying to establish, the colors that remained could and should be examined again. The colors are great in my opinion for their “old” look, but now they are trying to portray a fabulous, glamorous look. So you wanna know what I thought they should do with the space?
Well for starters. I must explain something. It is not in my best interests to tell a client to go ahead and waste the hundreds of dollars and effort that they just basically spent on painting their entire home. But one thing this couple does want is a home that looks like a show home and I could not in the best interests of them go with a shade for their office that just would not go long term. Paint is an investment and that’s why it’s so important to get a critical view and opinion on the colors you have decided for your space. Who wants to paint over and over year after year? So in the end we decided that it would be best to keep the room walls dark brown till they could address the paint issues at later date. When they do decide to paint I would however like to see the office lightened up a bit, but not too much. It doesn’t receive a lot of natural light so adding a really light shade would just drown out the space in my opinion. I want to keep the space warm, but leave a clean, and glamourous appeal overall.
This is roughly the shade and degree of color I would like to see in this space. I think with this colour on the wall, the elements I introduced to the space would just pop and it would give it that glamourous look I think this couple is after!
What do you think? Do you think they should paint it?
Oh, and FYI there will be photos of the space soon. Very soon, I promise…..
Have a fabulous, and Glamourous Day!

One of the things that we love the most about our home and the thing we get the most compliments on is the chocolate brown. The brown looks great with our look. It adds Drama and depth to the rooms.

I appreciate your ability to be honest about your opinion. That must be the hardest part of helping people with their spaces, you dont want to push them in a direction they dont want to go, but then again as a professional you know there are certain aspects that will help them achieve the desired look. Tough spot. I’ve never really looked at paint as an investment until our current project. We chose SW Olympus White. Honestly, we purchased the lowest grade of contractor paint because it is just the two of us and we knew there would be no problem with durability. What we did not consider is coverage. Plus, we did not prime. Five gallons later, the 375 sq ft room still needs a fourth coat. In your experience is there usually problems with contractor grades? I painted 4 swatches of paint before we decided on this one and you can still tell where those 4 swatches are even though there are 3 coats over it. I guess we made a mistake not priming. It was an expensive mistake!!

Yes, as a commitment to any client that I work with, it is always my first and formost importance that I stay true to 100% of the feeling they are trying to capture in a room.
Sorry to hear about your paint issues. When you are laying up dry wall you MUST Prime, at least 2 times and forget the contracter grade of paint. This is just one way to waste your money and you found that out. We learn from everything we do don’t we? If we think we know it all, then we’re headed down a bad path… Good luck with the rest of the renos!!
