The last couple of days Darryl has been very busy finishing up some other projects for other clients so I took upon myself to take some photos of the tulips that I purchased at our local florist. At 3 bunches for $10.00 I couldn’t resist.
I used to know a lot about aperture and F-stops and all that jargon around 8 years ago, but since I have totally forgotten all that Darryl once taught me and quite frankly why in the world would I have to keep up when I have a professional in my home? Would you? By no means am I lazy, I would just rather leave certain things to a professional. Would you try to clean your own teeth instead of getting your teeth cleaned professionally by your dentist? Probably not, although I realize that’s a bit of an exaggeration. The same thing applies to photography if you really need some great shots. Be patient with me, and you will begin to figure out my bizarre interesting humor.
The day I chose to take these shots, it was a relatively even day as far as cloudiness goes, but I managed to figure out some great ways to capture the brightness of these simple tulips. I had some limes and lemons in my fridge, so I decided to add those in the shot to bring out the greens and yellows in all the tulips. I have learned over the last few years when we have taken photos to keep things simple, and no doubt you will pump a great shot out.
I used some of the tips that Darryl has given me. I changed some of the settings on my little point and shoot camera. I also used some of the tin foil tricks that he gave for basic cameras like most of us have. I was using our Canon G11 that we use for quick day trips (instead of hauling 3 bags of lighting equipment with us). Not kidding….By no means would I want to even try to attempt to go anywhere near all his lighting equipment. Trust me, I have no interest in trying to learn his system. I am usually the person behind the scenes pulling the photo shoot together. All in all the photos came together well, but I have to keep working at it. Practice… Practice….Practice…
Darryl has written some great articles in my blog concerning lighting here and here and other tips for better photos. I have to say that Darryl is a great teacher and I say that not because he is my husband but because he truly is passionate about cameras and all that they can do for you. His approach is to learn and be taught well with what you have. Looking at what equipment you “think” you should have to take some amazing shots for your blog, or own personal shots is not a healthy way to go. So a big thanks to Darryl for taking the time to show some of my readers that they hold the ability too. If I can learn some great tricks then you can too! Trust me.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Jodi,
I LOVE the staging of this photo. The geometrical play of the octagon and hexagon dishes, while both in white is stunning. Not to mention, everything looks so fresh!
