I for one love Ikea. How can I not love the brightness of the store, refillable coffee at my fingertips, my kids love the escalator, the show rooms make you want to crawl into the beds and take a nap, and Ikea really has a knack for piecing everything in their store to fit together in a cohesive way.
The only issue that seems to come up with most homeowners is that they take one look at the prices of Ikea and that’s all they buy for their home. Don’t get me wrong I think Ikea has some amazing products from anything from kitchen Cabinets, dishware, storage and the list goes on and on. When Darryl won the $1000 Ikea gift card this past fall at the IDS show, I really needed to think about what was the best way to spend this money so it has given me the challenge to mix and match low and high-end items without it all looking like a Ikea showroom.
Three Ideas on how to pull a room together Using Ikea Products.
1. Be Creative in your DIYness and know your limits.
This is a example of a DIY that has gone great. I always encourage everyone to at least try your hand at DIY and then you will know whether or not that you have a knack for it. What started as a humble Ikea Dresser turned into this Beautiful, clean, tailored, high-end looking dresser. Paired with some great styling I think this looks works well.
2. Mixing up Different Hard Elements.
Most Home owners realistically don’t have 1o,ooo to spend on every room that they decorate, so using high-end pieces mixed with low-end elements is a really great way of achieving a cohesive look and fabulous at the same time. Take these simple Ikea counter stools, I think they look outrageous next to these more expensive industrial Tables.
3. Mix up your soft surfaces and styling opportunities.
Just because Ikea Sells bedding or dinnerware in groupings doesn’t mean that you have to stick to all Ikea bedding or dishes. Take this opportunity to mix and match low-end bedding with higher end textiles. This puts your stamp on the project and you walk away with a more well-rounded look that not everyone will recognize.
Thoughts anyone?

I think that’s exactly the way to handle Ikea. A little can be a budget saver but too much looks a dorm room.

The best advise, Jodi! I love an eclectic mix in all my rooms and selectively using furnishings, lighting & other decor items from Ikea can really add to a great look overall.

I love the first photo – such a great example of upping the IKEA ante! And with IKEA there’s a lot of ante, but I’m with Carol – too much and you’ve gone back to college 😉 Great article!
