I have to say that not only have I been really busy working on my living room design (as well as some major changes to the kitchen), I really haven’t given you a sneak peek into some of the plans I have for our living room. A few weeks back I showed you a bit of a viewing of the customized bookshelves we made, and how they have been so popular with our children.
Our living room is I would say 85% complete and when it’s all finished I will get it professionally photographed for you to see the final product. I’m excited to get it styled up for its big day for the big reveal. My favorite time of a photoshoot is the styling end of things make me giddy like a school girl.
The main opportunity to transform this living room space came from the lack of presence from our mantel. It was bleak, boring and truly dated I must say.
Last year I made a change to it just before Christmas, just to make do till the opportunity arose to finally complete the fireplace mantel. This is the before picture of the mantel when we first bought the house.

Then in December of last year I decided to take a few hours and paint the mantel white. Why not? I already had the paint anyways…. It turned out like this…

This is has been a great change, but bringing the space together properly needed some more work. A lot more work. That’s where Darryl my handy-dandy husband comes in. My favorite part. This is how it works with us. I dream up plans and designs and he tells me if it will work. IF it doesn’t then we move on to plan B. Luckily for me, the plans I had for the design of the fireplace would work and did work. Tell me what you think?

Yesterday the sun was shinning through my windows and it was the perfect time for me to get some shots of the mantel. This is the most I will show you for now, and I am so happy with the progress of the room so far. The basic plan was to rid our living room of the storage cabinet that used to house our T.V and existing speakers, Movies and Music. Darryl built a little cove for the T.v to hang in, but in my original plans I really wanted to be able to cover the flat screen with a piece of art, etc. The Vent pipes were in our way so we were not able to go back as far as we originally wanted to. I am happy with the over all feel of this side of the room. It is calm, uncluttered, sophisticated, and rich in a variety of textures.
Will show you more later. Have a fantastic day!
Jodi
And it looks even better in person! Love what you both have done to the space. Was telling Helen about your place!
Thanks Barb, you are too sweet.
I love what you have done – it’s so elegant and interesting now. Your home is very welcoming as are you!
What a great transformation! I bet the fireplace elevates the whole room. Awesome job you 2!
WOW! What a great transformation!! Love it even more now knowing where it started out!
Gorgeous, Jodi! I wish I could have seen it in person. 🙂

Oh, I forgot to mention that I bought my branches through a US company called Blooms and Branches.
Wow it looks so beautiful! I’m obsessed with paneling and this one takes the cake! Great job, love the symmetry too!
Thanks Amanda, it’s nice to hear from you here on my site!
Love your home!! You guys have done such a fabulous job. You guys are team “Ikea Hackers done right”!!!
Seeing the before & after is just amazing Jodi, you guys did an incredible job!! I’m so glad I saw it in person too 🙂

Looking good! Love the symmetry between the fireplace insert and TV. Very easy on the eyes.
I love!!
I saw this picture on Pinterest and fell in love! Where did you get the tile??
Where did ya get the side furniture cabinet?
I would also like to know this.
The cabinets on either side of the fireplace are Ikea Besta cabinets, Jodi just had me mount them to the wall directly to remove the visual clutter of having furniture legs.
I love you mantel and fireplace surround. How tall is the mantel from the floor to the top of the mantel?
Thanks.
I can’t remember exactly (and we are currently away from home for several months so I can’t go check) but I think it is about 50-54″ from the floor.
Where did you purchase your stools from?
Where did you purchase your stools from?
We found the stools via Craigslist. Sometimes there are some items that come up that are pure gold 😉
I love everything that you guys did it’s a beautiful fireplace, you decore, floors and paint. Protect. Can I ask you what color of paint your used? We are just started a remake and love the grays but having a hard time picking
The colour used in this case is “Dolphin Fin” by Behr. Grey’s can be tricky because it is all about the undertones that make up the colour, and getting those undertones in line with the rest of the room’s furnishings. The other thing to consider is the kind of light the room gets and the colour cast from your lighting.
I know this post is old but we have an almost identical looking setup/color scheme. We are trying to figure out how to configure seating. Do you have a photo of the rest of this space? THANK YOU!
You can find more images of our living room in the REVEAL post (http://simplyinspireddesign.com/our-living-room-reveal/)
Great job! The tile surround is perfect and exactly what we’ve been trying to find for our project. Can I ask where you bought it? Thanks!
The tile was a remnant found at a local tile shop (Greater Vancouver area, British Columbia). We don’t know the name or vendor and have not seen it since. We have seen some similar patterns in some other tiles recently, I guess we should record that info since this particular tile has been so popular!
Agreed love the tile and wood surround. Where did you get the fireplace mantel surround
what a beautiful fireplace and living room design. Can you tell me how high the floating cabinets are hung off the floor? We are getting ready to hang our fireplace cabinets as well and I was thinking around 3 feet high. Thanks for any information you can provide me.
Ours are hung approx. 12 inches.
